Midwest Deaf Ladies Golfers Association
2007 Fall MDLGA Newsletter
August 7, 2007

Dear Golfers, members, and friends,

Do you still want to play golf?  I still want to play golf but I’m taking a short break now due to extreme heat.  During MDLGA tournament week, the weather couldn’t be nice but not with the heat we had to deal with for the whole week. We all survived playing in heat with fun in heart.

The Northfield Inn, where we stayed, was nice and very accessible to anything you needed. It was only a walking distance to the driving range and miniature putt. Did you play putt-putt with your friends there?  I did with a good time. I hope you enjoyed your stay at the Northfield Inn.

The Oaks golf course was somewhat challenging with hills and long flat layouts to deal with especially 10th Par 3 Hole. That hole was a lot of fun for all of us.  It used to be country club many years ago and changed it to public course.

On behalf of the MDLGA officers, we want to welcome new member, Patty Simpson, to MDLGA list.  We want to extend in welcoming back the following members:  Janice Birchall, Bessie Early, Linda Nelson, Cynthia Weitzel, and Sheila Wollard.  Please come back again at Iowa next year.

We had total of 19 golfers with 11 playing 18 holes and 8 playing 9 holes.  Lauri Ponikiewski won the competition by largest margin. The winner of first flight for 18 holes went to Linda Nelson by 4 strokes with Coleen Sweeney behind.  Congratulations to Lauri and Linda, such fine golfers.  Illinois team of Janice Birchall and Coleen Sweeney captured the state team championship.

Veteran 9 holes golfer, Jean Hauser, claimed the championship flight victory with first flight championship to Janet Kluck.  Wisconsin team of Jean Hauser and Janet Kluck also won the state team championship. Congrats to these fine sweet ladies!

There was putting contest on Tuesday. Linda Nelson from NC won the putting contest with Coleen Sweeney at second place and Cynthia Weitzel at third place.  They all seemed to have a great time competing with each other.

MDLGA Luncheon was entertaining with tough games to play. Job well done to Luncheon Chairperson, Teri-Lyn.  Food was delicious and lucky winners got some neat prize such as cash and candle set on the table.  Golfers and guests enjoyed the luncheon very much!

The Hall of Fame award honor went to Lauri Ponikiewski from Michigan. Congratulations on her achievement! She had worked hard as our Law Chairperson as well as capturing a lot of 18 holes championships. We all are so proud of her and she will continue to work hard for all of us.  Hall of Fame award will be given in odd years as passed by members in general meeting so it will be given again at Wisconsin in 2009.

Linda Nelson of NC and Darrell Hovinen of MI earned the honor of Queen and King of MDGA respectively.  Congratulations to these cute couple!!

We had a good election going on at the general meeting.  The election of the officers took place with Coleen Sweeney elected as our MDLGA President for the next two years.  Shirley Hampton won the Board of Trustee election.  Dayleena Doan stepped down as Historian as she accepted the position of Hall of Fame Chairperson.  Judith Clark accepted as our Historian.  Lauri Ponikiewski accepted as our Law Chairperson once again.

We would like to say many thanks for Illinois host committee especially Janice Birchall for their wonderful job to making MDLGA possible at Springfield, IL. Now Janice can breathe easily.  We would like to say many thanks to interim President Sheila Wollard for doing a great job taking over Camy Lange’s place during the week.

I hope to see all of you and more of you out there to come down to Iowa next year which will be at Des Moines.  Our MDLGA golf course will be at Toad Valley golf course. You can check more info on golf course at this website address: www.toadvalleygolfcourse.com. They have everything we need such as driving range and etc… Please check it out and join us next year in 2008.

On behalf of the MDLGA officers, we wish you Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year of 2008!
